A Balanced Toddler Schedule: What does that look like?

Hey there, fellow parents! Today, I wanted to share a glimpse into a typical day in our household with a toddler. As every parent knows, establishing a routine that works for both you and your little one can be a game-changer. So, here’s a sneak peek into our daily toddler schedule that helps keep things running smoothly and ensures our little explorer stays happy and engaged.

Morning Delight:

7:15AM Our day starts bright and early so we can get the girls off to school. M is not a morning person, so if he isn’t already waking up, this can take us a little time, but when we come downstairs and see his sisters, he is beaming.

7:45AM We eat breakfast around 7:45 AM, after we drop the girls off at school, making sure to offer a balanced meal that includes protein, whole grains, and fruits. Think yogurt or sausage, cereal or pancakes, and some sliced fruit. Trust me, a good breakfast sets the tone for the day and fuels the endless energy.

Playtime Adventures:

8:15AM After breakfast, it’s playtime. Whether it’s playing with his trains or cars, getting creative with coloring, or diving into imaginative play, this is when M really leads our play. If I walk off to grab something or do a chore, he is right there pulling me back to play. Capturing these moments is what makes every day unique.

Exploring the World:

Around 9:30/10:00 AM, we are off to the great outdoors for a walk or to the park! Whether it’s a local park or a nature walk, he loves to be outside pointing out all different things. His current favorite to looking for planes in the sky. He is completely enamored watching them cross the sky. These outdoor adventures also make for some sweet photo opportunities! If we don’t get to go outside, we go to our upstairs play area where he has full reign to play with just about everything. He is always drawn to the train table and race car tracks. If we are having a low key morning, I typically turn on a show, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or a toddler learning channel on YouTube. This also allows me to get some things done around the house, while keeping him occupied and entertained.

Afternoon Adventures:

12:00/12:15PM It’s lunchtime and its all about offering variety. A PB&J is a stable, but I like to switch it up and offer hot dogs, or even cottage cheese with fruit. Whatever he is into that day.

12:45PM A full tummy paves the way for a cozy nap. And let’s face it, a little break for both parent and toddler is always a welcome interlude.

Energy Unleashed:

3:00/3:15PM After the nap, and picking up the girls from school, a light snack at keeps the energy levels up. Cheese cubes and whole grain goldfish crackers are a winner. Then comes the creative play at 3:30 PM, where we might do more coloring or play in the backyard. M loves to go on the trampoline with this sisters or hit baseballs off his plastic tee.

Quality Family Time:

6:00PM As the day winds down, it’s all about family bonding. Dinner is a chance to share stories and delicious food. Grilled chicken, steamed broccoli, and roasted potatoes are some of our favorites, but if I need an easy night, chicken nuggets and french fries are for sure on the menu. After dinner we all wind down and watch a TV show or movie together until its time to get ready for bed.

Sweet Dreams:

7:30PM A warm bath at sets the stage for a calm bedtime routine. Reading a bedtime story, (or 3) and singing a lullaby gently eases M into a calm and peaceful demeanor. A lot of the time he is ready and leaning into his crib to lie down.

8:00 PM Time for bed.

Remember, this schedule is more than just a routine; it also gives your little one piece of mind of what they can expect each day. I will say, about half of our days are like this, the other half we run errands, or go for playdates during our morning playtime. And those things are okay too. The more they grow the more flexible you can be with their schedule and push a nap to a little later or make other changes. These are just one of the many joys that goes into parenting. While every day comes with its own surprises, having a framework like this keeps us grounded and helps us cherish those moments that make life as parents truly extraordinary. So here’s to capturing the beauty of each day with our little adventurers – because these moments are the ones we’ll treasure forever.
